Smart7 to unikalny, wędrowny konkurs, obejmujący swoim zasięgiem festiwale w różnych miejscach Europy. Sekcja składa się z siedmiu filmów wybranych wspólnie przez kuratorów i kuratorki MFF Nowe Horyzonty (Polska), Kino Pavasaris IFF (Litwa), IndieLisboa IFF (Portugalia), Filmmadrid (Hiszpania), Transilvania IFF (Rumunia), Reykjavik IFF (Islandia) i Thessaloniki IFF (Grecja).
W selekcji pierwszej odsłony konkursu brały udział dyrektorki artystyczne wrocławskiego festiwalu – Ewa Szabłowska i Małgorzata Sadowska. Polskim reprezentantem w konkursie został Chleb i sól w reżyserii Damiana Kocura.
Siedem konkursowych filmów podróżowało w tym roku z Wilna, przez Lizbonę, Madryt, Kluż-Napokę, Wrocław i Reykjavik, zaś laureat został wyłoniony przez międzynarodowe młode jury na kończącym filmową wędrówkę festiwalu w Salonikach. Polskie widzki i widzowie mogli zobaczyć wszystkie konkursowe tytuły podczas 23. Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Filmowego mBank Nowe Horyzonty.
Wszystkie konkursowe filmy, niezależnie od wybranych przez ich twórców konwencji i środków ekspresji, są mocno wpisane w lokalność i tematy poruszające społeczności, które przedstawiają. Opowiedziane z perspektywy młodych ludzi, raz ironicznie, a kiedy indziej nostalgicznie, są próbą odnalezienia własnej drogi. Bywają również namysłem nad korzeniami, które kształtują naszą wrażliwość i odbiór świata, tego najbliższego, jak i dalszego, który przenika do najbardziej peryferyjnych zakątków.
Laureatem pierwszej edycji konkursu SMART7 został film Indie – prawdziwy list miłosny do kina i zachwyt nad jego siłą w kreowaniu niezwykłych światów. Telmo Churro zabiera widzów w nostalgiczną podróż, która prowadzi przez Lizbonę pełną złamanych serc, kryzysów egzystencjalnych i tragicznych bohaterów. Jak czytamy w uzasadnieniu jury: Celebrując europejską różnorodność kulturową, nagroda SMART7 trafia do filmu, który łączy w sobie różne dualizmy: indywidualność i zbiorowość, historyczną i osobistą przestrzeń pamięci oraz nostalgię – z jej narodowymi i międzynarodowymi implikacjami. Indie przypomina również o historii kina i samym dziedzictwie historycznym, które są eksplorowane przez twórcę zarówno z postmodernistycznym podejściem, jak i ze szczerą, dziecięcą ciekawością. To wielopokoleniowa opowieść, która bada nie tylko samą możliwość opowiadania na nowo złożonej, starej jak świat historii, ale porusza także uniwersalne tematy miłości, śmierci i nieustannego poszukiwania tożsamości.
W skład międzynarodowego młodego jury weszli: Sveinn Áki Árnason (Islandia), Alma Buhagiar (Rumunia), Giannis Delikostas (Grecja), Greta Mecelicaitė (Litwa), Adam Mytnik (Polska), Kenia Pollheim Nunes (Portugalia) and Amaia Zafiaur (Hiszpania).
